Ability[]

Leaves invisible traps that can ensnare and slow foes.

Ability Details[]

Djaan-Khe lays down an invisible trap at the location he is standing. When doing so, it gives off a small beep sound that is not affected by audio panning. Djaan-Khe can place up to three traps at once and placing more traps afterwards will destroy the oldest one. Djaan-Khe cannot place a trap on top of another trap, a conveyor belt, a button, or Phoebe's portal and cannot place it inside igloos (he can though place them at an igloo's entrance).

When a player steps on a trap, they get soft-stunned and tethered to it. While trapped, the player will be constrained in movement to a 7x7 square with the trap as the center. Moving past the square will soft-stun and snap the player back within it. The player will be constantly revealed and their movement slowed the closer they are to the trap. To disarm the it, the player needs to stand still to let the trap's timer tick down (indicated by the bars at the sides of the trap). Moving from one tile to another will pause the timer until the player stands still again. The opponent can still shoot and use their ability to defend themselves while waiting for the trap timer to finish. But with the player revealed, slowed and constrained in movement, it gives Djaan-Khe a chance to kill the player.

Players can disable the trap without setting it off. If they are one space horizontally or vertically of a trap, it will be revealed and the trap's timer will still tick down in a similar way to when a player is trapped but at twice the speed. However, if Djaan-Khe happens to be a tile orthogonal of the trap, the countdown will stop if a player is disarming it or will reset if they move away.

Ability Boost - More Traps: Djaan-Khe can have at most five traps on the map instead of three.

Notes:

  • Carmen can destroy inactivated traps by placing a block over it.
  • Selene can reveal a trap when jumping near one.
  • If a player is tethered by two or more traps, their movement range will be the union of each of the trap's 7x7 squares.
  • If a player teleports outside of the trap or if Epi removes their clone while his real body is outside of the trap, they get stunned and snapped back within the trap's range.
  • Killing Djaan-Khe will destroy all of his traps.

Strengths / Weakness[]

  • Djaan-Khe's traps can make traversing the map more tedious for other players. This is especially true for characters like Iris, Phoebe and Selene, who like to move around the map.
  • The traps are not a substitute for carmen's blocks in that they cannot block shots and provide good protection. It is possible for a player to intentionally trap themselves in order to get a good position to shoot Djaan-Khe.
  • Open maps and areas are not as reliable for catching someone in a trap.

Strategy[]

Most of the time, Djaan-Khe should not reveal his trap locations to his opponents. However, if he gets caught in a fast-paced situation, sometimes it is better to place down traps to prevent your opponent from chasing you; or if you are feeling risky, you can place traps randomly while circling your opponent to catch them in the moment.

Place traps around areas of interest, such as powerups or zones in zone control, to increase his chances of trapping someone. It is also helpful to place traps at critical areas where players have to pass through in order to reach some place (E.g narrow lanes, junctures, and small areas).

Do not be afraid to reposition traps if needed. Your opponent's interest could change over time. Anticipating these changes could help reorient your trap setup.

Djaan-Khe can use his traps to secure an area. This however isn't as effective as Carmen's blocks since players can still shoot past the traps.

After a player gets trapped, if Djaan-Khe intends to follow up by killing the player, he still needs to watch out for retaliation from the trapped player. Carmen can be especially tricky to deal with since she can set up a local barrier against Djaan-Khe.

Trivia[]

  • Djaan-Khe's name is officially pronounced "janky" since during beta testing, Djaan-khe's ability was initially considered janky by most of the beta testers.
